Eddie Hearn Vows to Enter MMA, Criticizing UFC's Stagnant Star Power
Matchroom Boxing impresario Eddie Hearn is setting his sights on the mixed martial arts world, expressing intentions to launch his own promotion and recruit several high-profile UFC fighters. This potential expansion marks a new front in the escalating rivalry between Hearn and UFC CEO Dana White.
The long-standing animosity between the two promoters intensified recently with White's foray into boxing via Zuffa Boxing, which notably secured Conor Benn – a former Matchroom protégé – in a lucrative $15 million one-fight deal. In retaliation, Hearn joined the team of current UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall in an advisory capacity, hinting at a broader strategic move into MMA.
Hearn has been a vocal critic of the UFC's business model, particularly regarding fighter compensation and the perceived failure to cultivate new star personalities. In a recent interview, Hearn elaborated on his plans for MMA, emphasizing his commitment to doing it "the right way."
"While it's something we're actively exploring, I want to ensure we do it correctly," Hearn stated. "My involvement with Tom Aspinall is helping me better understand the fighters and their contracts. I could secure a $10 million MMA broadcast deal now, but my priority is to achieve lasting success and build it the right way."
Hearn boldly predicted that by summer 2026, Matchroom could sign five to six of the UFC's biggest names. He asserted that the UFC's primary weakness lies in its inability to effectively promote the profiles, personalities, and compelling storylines of its athletes. Drawing a comparison, Hearn noted, "Jake Paul's events feature massive names with big, recognizable personalities. Yet, you have Conor McGregor, arguably the sport's biggest star, sidelined. If Conor Benn commands $15 million, what should McGregor earn? I'd say $100 million! These are the very personalities that are diminishing within the UFC."
These remarks from Hearn follow recent speculation surrounding Conor McGregor's highly anticipated return to the octagon, which was notably absent from an upcoming major UFC event. McGregor has not competed since sustaining a leg injury against Dustin Poirier in 2021.
