Islam Makhachev Suggests Usman Nurmagomedov's UFC Move is Highly Likely
Professional Fighters League (PFL) lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov's time with the promotion appears to be nearing its end. Nurmagomedov, still considered the top free agent in mixed martial arts, recently declined the PFL's contract renewal offer of $2 million. This decision strongly suggests a potential move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
As the cousin of UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov, Usman Nurmagomedov, if signed by the UFC, would present a significant challenge to the already competitive lightweight division. While the PFL could still present a competitive offer, UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, a close teammate of Nurmagomedov, has expressed strong doubts about him re-signing.
Makhachev Confident in Nurmagomedov's UFC Signing
In a recent interview with Match TV, Makhachev was asked about the likelihood of Nurmagomedov joining the UFC. He confidently stated that there is a 90% probability of the signing occurring.
"It's the perfect move for him; he needs to prove he’s the best in the world. He could face a top-10 rival and soon earn a title shot," Makhachev commented on Nurmagomedov's potential UFC career. He added, "He grew up alongside Khabib and me, has trained with the best from the start of his career and has extensive experience working with champions; now is the best time for him to join the UFC."
Currently, Nurmagomedov remains a free agent, but his UFC debut could be imminent. He was recently seen supporting his teammate Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC Shanghai.
