Ali Abdelaziz Points Finger at Ilia Topuria for Failed Islam Makhachev Super Fight
Ali Abdelaziz, manager for UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev, has squarely placed the blame on Ilia Topuria for the collapse of a highly anticipated super fight between the two champions.
Previously, Topuria's manager, Malki Kawa, indicated that his fighter was dissatisfied with the financial terms offered for a potential bout against Makhachev at UFC Freedom 250. In contrast, UFC CEO Dana White had suggested that Makhachev was sidelined with a hand injury.
However, Abdelaziz presented a different account in an interview with TMZ. He asserted that the fight offer was indeed made, but it was Topuria who ultimately took issue with the proposed conditions. "I received a call about Ilia fighting Islam," Abdelaziz recounted. "It was midday, Islam was asleep, and I was thrilled about the prospect. Shortly after, I got another call saying, 'Never mind, the fight’s not going to happen,' before I even had a chance to speak with Islam."
The prominent MMA manager then expressed skepticism regarding Topuria's genuine desire for the matchup. "I believe Ilia and Islam is the biggest fight the UFC can make. I think this fight should happen this year. But in a way, does Ilia really want it?" Abdelaziz pondered.
Despite his firm stance, Abdelaziz also conveyed an understanding of Topuria's situation. He acknowledged that Topuria, the reigning UFC Featherweight Champion, might be hesitant to commit to such a high-stakes challenge, especially following his recent title acquisition.
Regarding Makhachev, Abdelaziz confirmed that his fighter, the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion, is ready to compete against a top contender this summer. Abdelaziz, however, did not specify which fighter he considered to be the rightful challenger for Makhachev's next bout.
