Gillian Robertson Rejects Din Thomas' Apology, Citing Insincerity
The professional relationship between fighter Gillian Robertson and her coach, Din Thomas, appears to be strained.
Thomas, who was in Robertson's corner for her UFC 330 co-main event bout against Mackenzie Dern for the women's strawweight title, has reportedly announced he will no longer be cornering fighters. While his initial announcement during the post-fight show was met with surprise, further comments made by Thomas after the event drew significant criticism.
Specifically, Thomas's remark that Robertson had come as close as she would ever get to winning UFC gold was deemed insensitive. Although Thomas later issued an apology, calling his comments "despicable," Robertson has expressed doubt about its sincerity.
In a message shared with Ariel Helwani, Robertson explained her stance: "He did reach out to me privately at 5:00 PM and then sent a voice message apologizing around 7:30 PM, to which I have not responded due to comments he has made since the broadcast, privately, to my team that led me to believe there is not much weight in the apology, such as, ‘Me doing that publicly was more so for TV purposes and ratings.'"
Robertson appears ready to move past the incident and focus on her career. She stated, "I don’t think there’s a conversation to be had. I’m good with everything. The people who sign my checks are cool. As for now, I regroup, take some time to heal, and I will be back in the gym as soon as possible on the same mission."
Thomas had previously indicated a long-standing consideration to step away from cornering fighters, even suggesting he contemplated it after Tyron Woodley's boxing loss in 2021. It remains to be seen if this latest decision will be permanent.
Gillian Robertson Declines Din Thomas' Apology, Doubting Sincerity
Fighter Gillian Robertson has indicated that she does not believe coach Din Thomas's apology is genuine. Following Thomas's controversial comments after Robertson's UFC 330 title fight loss to Mackenzie Dern, he issued an apology. However, Robertson stated that subsequent private remarks made by Thomas to her team have led her to question the sincerity of his apology, particularly the suggestion that his public statement was for "TV purposes and ratings." As a result, Robertson feels there is no further discussion to be had and is focused on her recovery and return to training.
