Hydration vs. Moisturizing: Which is Better for Aging Skin?
Many people, even those well-versed in skincare, often consider hydration and moisturization to be the same. However, a hyaluronic acid serum and a barrier-focused face moisturizer offer distinct benefits, though they can be complementary. In essence, hydration provides water to the skin, while moisturizers deliver oils.
This fundamental difference means they serve unique functions in the skin, impacting all skin types, but especially aging skin. Understanding the nuances between hydration and moisturizing is crucial, and using both in your skincare regimen can be highly beneficial.
What is the difference between hydrating and moisturizing?
Dr. Jessie Cheung, a dermatologist in Chicago and New York, likens hydration to filling a reservoir and moisturization to building a dam. "Hydrating involves increasing the water content within the skin and helping it attract and retain that water, primarily through humectants and the skin's natural moisturizing factors," she explains. "Moisturizing, on the other hand, is about strengthening the outer barrier with lipids to prevent water evaporation."
Does aging skin need hydration, moisturization, or both?
Both water and lipids are vital for skin health, and their importance grows with age. "As we age, our skin produces less hyaluronic acid and natural moisturizing factors, making it less efficient at retaining water," states Dr. Cheung. Concurrently, she notes, the skin barrier weakens and produces fewer lipids like ceramides, leading to increased water loss. "Therefore, aging skin isn't just 'drier'," she emphasizes, "it faces a dual challenge: reduced water retention capacity and a compromised barrier."
This can result in skin that appears and feels rough, dry, and crepey. These are not the only age-related skin changes. Dr. Jenna Queller, a dermatologist in Boca Raton, FL, points out that "collagen and elastin production also decrease, and the skin's ability to repair itself slows down." She adds, "These changes can lead to increased dryness, rough texture, fine lines, and a loss of the youthful 'bounce' often associated with well-hydrated skin."
Furthermore, hormonal shifts, such as the fluctuations and subsequent decline in estrogen during perimenopause, can exacerbate these issues. Estrogen receptors play a role in the production of hyaluronic acid, barrier lipids, and even collagen. Consequently, relying solely on either hydration or moisturization tends to "underperform" on mature skin, according to Dr. Cheung. "You need to replenish the reservoir and reinforce the dam," she advises.
Do you moisturize or hydrate first?
Generally, hydration should be applied first. "I often recommend applying a hydrating serum to slightly damp skin, followed by a moisturizer to seal in that hydration and support the skin barrier," suggests Dr. Queller. This order is by design: serums, typically containing a high concentration of active ingredients, are formulated to penetrate the skin more easily, while thicker creams create a physical barrier on the surface.
