Udinese secured a notable free transfer signing in former Real Madrid player David Alaba about a week ago. This move followed Oumar Solet's injury setback, and the Austrian's arrival raised eyebrows.

During his presentation as a Udinese player, Alaba addressed questions regarding his decision.

The former Real Madrid defender highlighted Kosta Runjaic's influence on the deal.

“I’m here because I spoke with the coach and he told me about the project here,” Alaba stated, as reported by Corriere dello Sport. “I took my time to decide, and I convinced myself this was the right path for my career, also because I’ve always wanted to play in Serie A.”

Alaba also indicated that he now considers himself primarily a central defender, believing it to be his strongest position.

“I see myself better as a central defender, though I can adapt to full-back or midfield,” he added. “Regardless of the role the coach assigns me, I’m here to help the team.”

The defender shared that he received positive input from Luka Modrić, his former teammate at Real Madrid.

“I spoke with Modrić in recent weeks, and also with Ribéry and Arnautović, who know Serie A and introduced me to this league.”

The Austria international is anticipated to be a significant asset for the Friulian club, bringing much-needed experience to the defense, especially after Thomas Kristensen's departure and given doubts surrounding Solet's future.
