Gattuso Calls Northern Ireland Playoff "Most Important Match of My Career"

Italy's head coach, Rino Gattuso, has declared the upcoming World Cup playoff against Northern Ireland on Thursday to be the most significant match of his professional life.

The Azzurri missed direct qualification for the tournament, concluding their group stage campaign behind a strong Norway squad but narrowly ahead of Israel. Their path now involves a single-leg semi-final clash with Israel, followed by a fixture against the victor of the Wales versus Bosnia encounter.

During his pre-match press conference, Gattuso was directly questioned about the game's importance. He affirmed, as reported by Calciomercato, that it "will definitely be the most important match." He elaborated on the immense stakes, stating, "I have a lot at stake, I’m young, but I have a country on my back. I won’t deny that in recent months I’ve been stopped in the street many times, asking me to lead Italy to the World Cup. I’m used to the pressure, but it’s the most important match of my career."

Gattuso also expressed concerns regarding the fitness of key players Alessandro Bastoni and Gianluca Scamacca, though he expects most others to be available. He detailed, "Bastoni has been working 30 percent with the team, and we’ll try again tonight. Scamacca is further back. They’re the only ones to evaluate; the others are all fine, including Calafiori, Mancini, and Politano."

When prompted to address the fervent Italian supporters, eager for World Cup qualification, Gattuso conveyed a message of self-reliance: "It’s up to us. If we take to the field, even in the stadium, and give the impression of being on top of things, everything else will follow. We can’t ask anything of anyone; we are the architects of our own destiny. It takes great calm and the awareness that we’re playing against players with venom. They say we have no identity, but it’s right that they say so. We have to be ready."
