GB Boxers Guaranteed Three Medals at Europeans
Great Britain is assured of at least three medals at the European Boxing Championships in Bulgaria. Chantelle Reid, Damar Thomas, and Abdul Burton have all reached the semi-finals.
Reid, a 28-year-old Commonwealth Games silver medallist, defeated Ireland's Evelyn Igharo 5-0 in the women's light-middleweight division. She will face Serbia's Milena Matovic in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
Thomas, 21, also secured a 5-0 victory in his men's super-heavyweight bout against Georgia's Nikoloz Begadze. He is set to compete against Mahammad Abdullayev of Azerbaijan in the next round.
Burton, 20, earned a 3-2 win over local favorite and Olympic bronze medallist Javier Ibanez, advancing him to a fight with Turkey's Semih Gumus.
"Sometimes you have got to dig in and when things went against me I had to get stuck in and show who I was," Burton commented. "I am young, hungry and here to take over."
Other British boxers, including Lauren Mackie, Amy Broadhurst, Callum Makin, and Oladimeji Shittu, are scheduled for quarter-final matches on Wednesday. However, more than half of the 15-strong British squad has already been eliminated.
Earlier results saw flyweight Ruby White lose a 3-2 decision to Turkey's Hatice Akbas, an Olympic silver medallist. Emily Asquith was defeated 5-0 in her light-heavyweight bout against Ireland's Lisa O'Rourke. In the men's heavyweight category, Commonwealth Games champion Isaac Okoh lost 3-0 to Germany's Kevin Lebowski.
