Anthony Smith Update: Trial Set After 'Not Guilty' Plea in Alleged Wife Altercation

Former UFC light heavyweight title contender Anthony Smith is facing significant prison time following an alleged domestic violence incident. Smith has entered a 'not guilty' plea to four felony charges related to an altercation with his wife earlier this summer, and a trial has now been scheduled.

Smith, 38, retired from mixed martial arts after his last fight at UFC Kansas City last year. He has since transitioned to a full-time broadcasting career, becoming a prominent voice in Paramount's UFC coverage.

The alleged incident occurred on July 26th at a bar in Gretna, Nebraska. According to Sarpy County police reports, Smith is accused of threatening to kill his wife if she did not leave with him. He reportedly then physically forced her into a vehicle, from which she managed to escape during the drive. It is further alleged that Smith attempted to run over his wife near their home before law enforcement arrived. He was subsequently arrested and booked into Sarpy County jail, later being released on a $500,000 bond.

During a court appearance in Sarpy County, Smith pleaded 'not guilty' to charges including terroristic threats, false imprisonment, and domestic violence. He and his legal team are scheduled to return to court on September 21st for an arraignment hearing. If convicted of these charges, Smith could face up to 20 years in prison.

Smith has not yet publicly commented on the arrest or his current legal situation. UFC CEO Dana White has acknowledged the news, stating he was surprised to learn of Smith's predicament.

Earlier this year, Smith made a return to combat sports at Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 9, where he secured a first-round submission victory over former UFC heavyweight Chase Sherman. Throughout his UFC career, Smith achieved notable wins against opponents such as Alexander Gustafsson, Volkan Oezdemir, and Shogun Rua.
