Jake Paul: 'I Believe the UFC is Dying'
Jake Paul, a prominent figure in the combat sports world, has consistently voiced his disapproval of the Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) business practices, particularly concerning fighter compensation. With Paul's Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) now venturing into mixed martial arts with a Netflix event scheduled for May, and UFC CEO Dana White launching Zuffa Boxing, the two organizations have emerged as direct rivals.
"We are primarily focused on prioritizing fighters, staging the largest possible events, and disrupting the existing landscape," Paul stated, acknowledging the competitive dynamic. "At the end of the day, we are now competitors to the UFC and Zuffa Boxing. They will be competitive, and so will we."
Paul attributes the UFC's current struggles to its reluctance to invest sufficiently, making it difficult to cultivate new stars and deliver highly anticipated bouts. "I believe they've found it challenging to create stars and the desired fights given their limited spending," he explained. "This has led to a bottleneck, resulting in cards that don't always excite fans and a lack of consistent appearances from top stars like Jon Jones and Conor McGregor. While spectacular, frequent fights initially propelled their business, they're now unwilling to spend."
Regarding the upcoming UFC event at the White House on June 14, Paul expressed disappointment with the fight card, suggesting the venue itself would be the main attraction. "I think the White House will be the star," he remarked. "I, like many fans, was let down by the card, especially after such high expectations. If it hadn't been hyped for so long, perhaps people would have been happier with a random announcement. But they made it seem like it would be the greatest card ever, which it certainly isn't."
Paul views the current MMA scene as a "Wild West," presenting a significant opportunity for MVP to reshape the industry. "MMA is in a strange place right now, and it's truly the Wild West," he asserted. "We have a massive chance here to disrupt everything, to put fighters first, ensure they get the pay they deserve, and the platform they deserve, because I genuinely believe the UFC is dying, and MVP is here to take over."
