Charles Oliveira Dominates Max Holloway in UFC 326 Main Event
The headline event of Saturday's UFC 326 fight card featured a lightweight showdown for the symbolic BMF title, pitting former champion Charles Oliveira against former featherweight king and current BMF titleholder Max Holloway.
Their initial encounter took place 11 years prior at UFC Fight Night 74 in a featherweight bout. On that occasion, Holloway claimed victory early in the opening round after Oliveira sustained a neck injury. Both fighters have since carved out legendary careers, leading to this highly anticipated rematch held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Following a touch of gloves, Oliveira initiated the fight with a powerful leg kick. Holloway began establishing his jab, landing a right hand. Oliveira then intensified his pressure, securing a clinch that led to a successful takedown and transition into side control.
From side control, Oliveira postured up to deliver two significant elbows. Holloway maintained his composure on the canvas, attempting to return to his feet. Oliveira seized the opportunity, taking Holloway's back and immediately working to apply a rear-naked choke. Holloway, known for his resilient submission defense (having only been submitted once in his career), effectively thwarted the attempt while Oliveira landed short left hands. Holloway continued his tenacious defense until the round's conclusion, even smiling in the final 20 seconds. This round was predominantly controlled by Oliveira, earning him a 10-9 score.
The second round commenced with a combination from Holloway, which Oliveira met with a teep kick. Oliveira swiftly closed the distance, securing another takedown and denying Holloway any space to maneuver. As Holloway managed to get to a knee, Oliveira landed elbows, then established a body triangle from Holloway's back, continuing with more powerful elbows. Holloway once again defended skillfully against Oliveira's attempts to lock in a rear-naked choke, successfully surviving another round on the ground. This round was also scored 10-9 in favor of the Brazilian.
The third stanza largely mirrored the preceding rounds, with Oliveira promptly bringing the fight to the mat and asserting his dominance in grappling positions. Through three rounds, Oliveira had clearly controlled the contest, securing another 10-9 score.
Oliveira began the fourth frame with a leg kick. Holloway connected with a right hand, but Oliveira immediately rushed forward into a clinch, securing yet another takedown. He maintained side control, landing heavy elbows. Despite Holloway's attempts to roll, Oliveira maintained his position on Holloway's back, re-establishing a body triangle. This round was also scored 10-9 for Oliveira.
The final round saw Oliveira land a combination before attempting another takedown. This time, Holloway initially gained the top position, delivering short left hands as Oliveira sought a reversal. Holloway stood up, but Oliveira remained connected, successfully securing another takedown. He worked from inside Holloway's closed guard, breaking it and transitioning to half guard. Holloway eventually managed to return to his feet, leading to a brief separation. Oliveira then landed a right hand, to which Holloway immediately responded. The fight concluded, showcasing an undeniably dominant performance from Oliveira.
The judges unanimously awarded the victory to Oliveira via unanimous decision, with all three scorecards reflecting a dominant 50-45 sweep.
