Tang Kai Defends ONE Featherweight MMA World Title Against Shamil Gasanov At ONE Fight Night 42

The esteemed featherweight MMA champion from China is set to defend his championship once more next month. Tang Kai will undertake his second defense of the ONE Featherweight MMA World Title against Russian contender Shamil "The Cobra" Gasanov. This highly anticipated bout will headline ONE Fight Night 42, airing live on Prime Video in U.S. primetime from Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium on April 10.

Tang's journey to the pinnacle of the sport was marked by strategic patience and striking precision. An impressive six-fight winning streak upon joining ONE Championship – including three first-round stoppages – secured him a shot at then-champion Thanh Le at ONE 160 in August 2022.

Through a meticulously fought five-round contest, the Sunkin International Fight Club representative systematically targeted his opponent's lead leg, dictated the pace, and established his striking distance, ultimately earning a decisive unanimous decision. This victory made him China's first male MMA World Champion, a moment widely celebrated by thousands of supporters back home in Shaoyang, Hunan province.

His reign was temporarily halted by an injury, allowing Le to claim interim gold. When the two rivals met again at ONE 166: Qatar in March 2024, it was for a title unification bout. Tang showcased his most dominant performance to date, systematically dismantling Le en route to a third-round TKO victory. The result not only secured a US$50,000 performance bonus but also definitively concluded their rivalry.

However, a non-title catchweight bout against Akbar Abdullaev, necessitated by Abdullaev missing weight, resulted in Tang's first loss under the ONE Championship banner. Despite this, his championship status remains unchallenged.

Shamil "The Cobra" Gasanov enters this contest as arguably the most formidable challenger in the featherweight division in recent memory. The Peresvet Fight Team and Tiger Muay Thai representative boasts an impressive 18-1 professional record, including six victories in ONE Championship, primarily earned through his dominant grappling and unyielding positional control.

He first showcased his dangerous potential with a swift first-round rear-naked choke submission against Kim Jae Woong, further solidifying his contender status with a dominant win over former divisional kingpin Martin Nguyen.

His most recent outing at ONE Fight Night 34 saw him avenge his only professional defeat against acclaimed submission grappler Garry Tonon, eliminating any lingering questions about his readiness for a world title.
