Preview Gian Piero Gasperini Emotional Press Conference Ahead of Roma Match

Roma has been a focal point of controversy recently due to a conflict between manager Gian Piero Gasperini and chief advisor Claudio Ranieri.

Following Gasperini’s questioning of the club’s transfer decisions, Ranieri publicly stated that all signings were approved by Gasperini, who had also voiced his opinions on players not acquired.

At a press conference preceding Roma’s upcoming Serie A fixture, Gasperini became visibly emotional. He spoke about the intense atmosphere of the past week, asserting his character and long-standing positive relationships in football.

Gasperini reflected on his extensive tenures, stating, “If I spent almost eight years in Genoa and nine in Bergamo, I’m not such a bad person.”

Describing his time at Atalanta, he emphasized the team’s composition: “Atalanta wasn’t just about young players or kids. It was a group of experienced players, which was then expanded, integrated, changed. But they weren’t just young players.”

He further elaborated on the successful working relationship at Atalanta: “That was an extraordinary thing, not just thanks to me, but also to the club. At a certain point, this club was so capable of working in harmony with the coach. At a certain point, this harmony, partly because the club had changed, partly because my father, to whom I was certainly closest, was no longer there.”

Gasperini also addressed his conversations with Ranieri, expressing surprise at the tone of their discussions: “Because we’ve never discussed things in that tone. Normal discussions.”

Gasperini departed the press conference visibly moved, appearing distressed after a challenging week for both himself and the club. This display of emotion was noted as an unprecedented event in Serie A.
