The Lecce and Lameck Banda Controversy Explained

The summer in Serie A has been marked by one of the most bewildering situations: the dispute between Lecce and Lameck Banda.

This case involves the Zambian winger's disappearance for several weeks, disagreements over his contract, and the unexpected involvement of FIFA in an unusual transfer to North Africa. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the events that have transpired.

Key Player in Serie A Survival

The 2025-26 Serie A season proved challenging for Lecce, ultimately concluding with a hard-fought survival. The team from Puglia spent a significant portion of the campaign in the lower half of the standings but managed to secure their place in Italy's top flight with a strong finish, winning three of their last five matches. Their crucial 1-0 victory against Genoa sealed their Serie A status.

That winning goal was scored by Lameck Banda, marking his fifth of the season, complemented by four assists. This performance should have been a cause for celebration and a period of rest before the next demanding season. However, for both Banda and Lecce, the summer months unfolded far differently than anticipated.

Disappearance and Contractual Disputes

In a surprising turn of events after the season concluded, Banda went missing. Lecce made numerous attempts to contact their 25-year-old winger, but he was unreachable.

As Banda missed his scheduled return for preseason training, frustration turned into concern, with both Italian and Zambian football communities worried about his well-being. Some speculation on social media even suggested he had gone missing while training in his home country.

However, reports from Zambia's Bola News confirmed that Banda was safe and continuing his training in Lusaka. Sources close to the player indicated that he had no intention of returning to Italy, citing "continued logistical and bureaucratic problems." The core of the issue, as reported, was Banda's belief that Lecce had extended his contract without his explicit consent.

Banda initially joined Lecce in 2022 on a four-year contract with an option for an additional year. His original deal was set to expire on June 30, 2026, but Lecce exercised their option to extend it until June 2027.

A source speaking to Bola News stated, "They extended his contract without his consent, which is not right, no notification whatsoever. He is not happy." Conversely, Italian media reported that Lecce possessed a unilateral option to extend Banda's contract until the summer of 2027, which they exercised. However, the source insisted that the club did not have the sole right to extend the agreement without Banda's approval.

Adding to the player's grievances, it was reported that Banda was owed one month's salary, along with a winning bonus from his last match.

Interest from Abroad and FIFA's Involvement

With a significant rift between the player and the club, Banda attracted interest from Al-Fateh in Saudi Arabia and, notably, Libyan champions Asswehly in July.

Al-Fateh's offer of €2.5 million was rejected by Lecce. The Libyan club, Asswehly, became a more favored destination for Banda, partly due to the prospect of a lucrative contract and participation in the CAF Champions League.

An increasingly frustrated Lecce remained insistent on their stance. They were unwilling to let Banda leave as a "free agent" or at a significantly reduced price, expecting compensation in the range of €5-7 million at a minimum.

As of August, the saga continued to unfold, seemingly in Banda's favor. Lecce had reportedly approached FIFA with their case but without success. The Serie A club was allegedly seeking compensation, while Italy's FIGC also attempted to have the winger's International Transfer Certificate (ITC) canceled. Both efforts reportedly failed.

Meanwhile, Banda was said to be in negotiations with the Libyan club Asswehly, reportedly meeting with them in Egypt. Asswehly has reportedly offered Banda a two-year contract valued at €1.6 million per season, ahead of their domestic league and CAF campaign.

Asswehly's position is that Banda was "a player who was free of contract and that his engagement with Lecce expired by its own term on 30 June 2026." They have also refuted Lecce's demands for payment. It is understood that Lecce intends to pursue the matter further.
