Inter's Resilient Victory Over Como Signals Evolutionary Progress
At halftime, Como posed a significant threat to Inter's lead, nearing a victory that could have elevated them above Juventus and dramatically altered the title race. However, they were ultimately given a stark reminder of Inter's strength.
Marcus Thuram halved the deficit before the break and then leveled the score four minutes into the second half. A brace from Denzel Dumfries ultimately secured the win for Inter, with Lucas Da Cunha's late penalty making the scoreline more respectable for Cesc Fàbregas' team.
This defeat marked Como's first since February, a testament to their progress as Serie A's most defensively solid team. However, the loss to Inter also highlights the challenges that remain for them.
Como currently sits fifth, two points behind fourth-placed Juventus, and only eight points behind second-placed Napoli. With third-placed Milan experiencing a recent dip in form, Champions League qualification is still an open race. Conversely, Roma and Atalanta remain close contenders in sixth and seventh, respectively.
While European football at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia next season seems highly probable for Como, a definitive observation is that Inter has overcome the late-season fragility that affected them last term.
Despite a less successful Champions League campaign this season, being eliminated by Bodø/Glimt in the knockout play-off, Inter has shown remarkable consistency in Serie A, losing only five games throughout the season. Their most recent league defeats were against rivals Milan in March and November.
With a nine-point lead at the top of the table and a relatively manageable schedule ahead, Inter is poised to retain their Serie A title, which they relinquished to Napoli last year.
Initial doubts were raised regarding the Inter hierarchy's decision to appoint club legend Cristian Chivu as Simone Inzaghi's successor. Inzaghi was an established coach in Italy's top flight when he took over from Antonio Conte in 2021, while Chivu's senior coaching experience was minimal, having only taken charge of Parma in February of the previous year.
However, Chivu had spent six years with the Inter academy before his stint at Parma, leaving a significant impression. It appears that the club's sporting structure, led by Beppe Marrotta, has once again made a successful managerial appointment by entrusting the team to a relatively inexperienced coach.
Inter is on track to reclaim the Serie A crown. Despite some early challenges in his tenure, Chivu appears to be guiding the team towards a period of sustained Italian dominance.
