Gasperini Laments Roma's "Worst" Performance After Europa League Exit to Bologna
In a thrilling all-Italian Europa League Round of 16 encounter, Bologna emerged victorious, eliminating Roma from the competition. This defeat adds to a challenging period for the Giallorossi, who have now gone four games across all competitions without a win. Their European journey has ended, and their position in the Serie A's Champions League qualification spots is increasingly precarious.
Following the dramatic loss to Bologna, manager Gian Piero Gasperini addressed the media, reflecting on his team's performance. He stated that the match uniquely showcased both the best and the worst aspects of his squad.
"It was a gripping match, and we are leaving with immense disappointment," Gasperini remarked. "We demonstrated our best qualities for almost the entire game, yet we also displayed the worst of what we are capable of. We were constantly forced to chase the game, despite performing some significant actions."
Gasperini further highlighted critical mistakes that directly led to Bologna's initial three goals. "It's truly a shame that we made specific errors contributing to all three of Bologna's first goals. These were unusual situations that unfortunately proved costly," he explained.
The Italian coach also suggested that fatigue played a significant role in the outcome, particularly evident as the game progressed beyond the standard 90 minutes. "When you reach this stage, the intensity rises, as do the levels of fatigue and pressure, despite many positive elements in our play. The team performed well for the full 90 minutes, even coming back from 3-1 down, and reacted with character. However, when you make such errors, you inevitably lose," Gasperini noted. "In extra time, the fatigue was especially noticeable in our defense. If you're missing four or five players in the same position, it's natural to struggle."
Despite the disappointment, Gasperini offered praise for his players, singling out Donyell Malen. "However, we discovered an extraordinary Malen, who significantly boosted our attacking threat compared to the first half of the season, even though we had more options then. In this past week, between the match against Como and tonight, I have very little criticism for my players, who have delivered top-level performances," he concluded.
