Calafiori: Italy Under Pressure Ahead of Northern Ireland World Cup Playoff
Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori is anticipated to be a pivotal player for Italy this week in their FIFA World Cup playoff fixture against Northern Ireland. The defender has openly acknowledged feeling the significant pressure surrounding the upcoming match.
During a press conference held at the Azzurri's training camp in Coverciano, the versatile player addressed a variety of topics concerning the crucial qualifier.
He praised Rino Gattuso for his close rapport with the players in recent months, even making a humorous comparison about their bond.
Calafiori stated, as reported by Calciomercato: "I genuinely valued the coach's approach toward me. In the last few months, I've felt a stronger connection to him than to my own mother. He was excellent at staying close to me, even when I was not with the team. Our dinner in London was also a wonderful opportunity to be together and talk."
He continued: "We haven't had extensive training opportunities lately, but there's more need for team outings and discussions than intensive training sessions. He definitely covered the bill (laughs). We talked about football, and Buffon and Bonucci were also there. It felt like an evening among friends; they shared some anecdotes, and then we shifted our conversation to the upcoming match."
Describing his sentiments before the game, Calafiori remarked: "I always prefer to think positively, because when you maintain a positive mindset towards achieving goals, you often succeed. The pressure is undeniable; there’s no avoiding it. We all understand how critically important it is for us to qualify for this World Cup. As much as possible, we try not to overthink it; we're already focused on the game itself."
He underscored the importance of team cohesion, believing it will be a decisive factor during the playoffs.
"Yes, I like to think so. But as I said earlier, you can’t predict the outcome of the match. The message we want to convey is to stick together and maintain a positive attitude. In such significant matches, tactical and technical abilities are only part of the equation; unity and mental fortitude are far more crucial."
There is no denying that Gattuso's squad will be under considerable scrutiny, especially given their previous failures to qualify for the last two World Cups. This time, the path to the tournament might be somewhat less complicated, as a victory against Northern Ireland would advance Italy to face either Wales or Bosnia in the subsequent round.
