Recent discussions have somewhat eased the strained relationship between Napoli and Romelu Lukaku.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, a meeting took place between the player and the club to address the situation after Lukaku declined multiple call-ups, opting instead to focus on his recovery in Belgium despite being deemed fit. The 32-year-old has had a limited season with the Partenopei, making only seven appearances due to recurring injury issues since last summer.
Lukaku is currently racing against time to be fit for the World Cup in Antwerp. While he might be ready to return to playing before the season concludes, the improved relations with the club have not altered Napoli’s stance on his future.
Napoli is expected to impose a fine on Lukaku for his prolonged absence over the past month. His departure from the Maradona stadium in the summer is still considered the more probable outcome, particularly with uncertainty surrounding Antonio Conte’s future at the club.
Having been acquired for just over €30 million two years ago, Napoli will aim to recover some of their investment if Lukaku is allowed to leave. The former Chelsea player has one year remaining on his contract, which pays him €7.69 million per year.
