With his future at Andretti now secure, Jake Dennis is shifting his focus towards the evolution of Formula E.
Currently positioned eighth in the standings, freshly re-signed, and already looking ahead, Jake Dennis approaches the midpoint of the season with clarity. Following the confirmation of his continued partnership with Andretti, the former champion articulated his areas for improvement and expressed his keen excitement for what the next generation of Formula E holds.
Confidence in Andretti
After several months of negotiations, Dennis and Andretti have solidified their extended partnership. Dennis, who initially joined the team in 2021, has renewed his contract to remain with them until at least 2027. Reflecting on his five-year tenure with Andretti, the 2022/23 Champion highlighted consistency as the most compelling factor in his decision to renew.
“Continuity is incredibly important. I’ve been with these guys for five years now and will continue for many more… I believe my side of the garage has been exceptionally well-structured, and I’ve had the same engineer for four years.”
The 30-year-old also revealed that flexibility played a crucial role in his signing. Beyond his commitments in Formula E, Andretti has supported Dennis in exploring other forms of motorsport.
Since 2018, he has served as a Test Driver for Red Bull, a role that has gained increasing importance with the integration of electric elements into Formula 1. Additionally, Dennis acts as a factory driver for BMW. While Dennis admits he won’t compete at Le Mans until driver weight limits are revised, he remains interested in a potential drive.
Roger Griffiths, who has been with Andretti since its Formula E inception, has been an influential figure in Dennis’s career. Speaking about his Team Principal, Dennis praised Griffiths’ calm and composed leadership style.
“He understands that my engineer, my mechanics, and my performance engineer are the people who enable me to go fast. He never attempts to interfere… If we’re performing well, he won’t be the first person to seek the limelight.”
With a new era of Formula E on the horizon, Dennis expressed strong confidence in his continued future with Andretti.
Dennis’ Season 12 Performance So Far…
Amidst a series of mixed results, Dennis currently occupies eighth place in the Formula E Drivers’ Championship. Trailing championship leader Pascal Wehrlein by fewer than 20 points, the British driver is still firmly in contention for his second championship title. However, the battle to maintain a top position is becoming increasingly challenging.
“I believe he [Wehrlein] is the only driver this year to have scored points in every race… it simply demonstrates the level of competition and how difficult it now is to be consistent.”
Following his first victory of the season in São Paulo, Dennis is optimistic that Andretti can secure further podium finishes. With five different winners across the initial five rounds and constantly evolving race strategies, Dennis believes that accumulated knowledge and adaptability will be key factors for success in the latter half of Season 12.
The Future of Formula E
When the next season commences, a new generation of Formula E cars will take to the track. The Gen4 cars, unveiled last November, will feature 600kW of power and active all-wheel drive throughout every phase of the race. This promises not only faster racing but also more intense wheel-to-wheel battles.
“I’ve only heard from a handful of drivers about what it’s [the Gen4 car] like, but all feedback has been incredibly positive regarding its increased speed, acceleration, and top speed. It’s an exciting time for Formula E.”
It’s not just the new generation of cars that excites Dennis; new tracks and locations are also on the agenda for Formula E in the coming years. While the London Excel Circuit has been removed from the calendar, a new British venue is likely to be selected soon. Additionally, Madrid has joined the calendar for the 2025/26 Season. Formula E’s expansion throughout Asia continues, with China set to host a second track on the calendar, the Sanya Street Circuit.
Eventually, Dennis would like to race in Australia, suggesting Sydney as a potential new venue. While this may currently be unlikely due to the introduction of a new car generation and increased freight costs, a race in Australia would significantly open doors to a new Formula E market.
Formula E is scheduled to return on March 20th at the Circuito Permanente Del Jarama in Madrid.
