A compelling European light-heavyweight title showdown between British contenders Shakan Pitters and Bradley Rea has been officially announced.
The two fighters are set to compete for the vacant EBU belt on June 28th. The bout will take place in Galway, Ireland, at Pearse Stadium, featuring on the undercard headlined by amateur standout Kieran Molloy taking on Kaisee Benjamin.
While the Molloy vs. Benjamin fight is poised to be a significant early challenge for the highly-rated Irish prospect in the welterweight division, the clash between Pitters and Rea presents a particularly intriguing matchup.
Shakan Pitters (20-2, 7 KOs) is finally set to receive his opportunity to fight for the EBU title, an opportunity that has eluded him on several past occasions.
The 35-year-old was initially scheduled to face Daniel Dos Santos earlier this year, but the Frenchman was forced to withdraw after failing a brain scan. Pitters then encountered his own issue, falling ill before their rescheduled bout last month, which opened the door for Bradley Rea (20-1, 10 KOs) to potentially step in on short notice.
However, Daniel Dos Santos ultimately declined to face Pitters, leaving `The Sting` without an opponent on the day their fight was cancelled.
Now, following Daniel Dos Santos being stripped of the championship, both Bradley Rea and Shakan Pitters will have the chance to claim the vacant blue and gold strap.
Elsewhere on the GBM Sports fight card, Lerrone Richards is scheduled to return to action against Ireland`s Joe Ward. This fight is widely seen as a must-win for the light-heavyweight technician.
Additionally, Irishman Sean McComb is expected to make his return appearance. While his opponent is yet to be confirmed, McComb will be looking to make a statement after his controversial loss to Arnold Barboza Jr. last year.
