Ishmael Davis, often stepping in on short notice, appears poised for a significant opportunity: a shot at the vacant British Super Welterweight championship against Sam Gilley. This comes after Louis Greene reportedly pulled out of his scheduled fight.
Sources indicate that the British Boxing Board of Control has given its approval for this intriguing potential matchup for the 154lb Lonsdale Belt. While the fight seems likely, an official announcement is still pending.
It is understood that Louis Greene (17-4, 11 KOs), who was slated to face Sam Gilley (18-1, 9 KOs) on June 7th, has withdrawn from their planned bout.
Gilley and Greene previously engaged in an exciting contest back in 2023. Despite intentions for a rematch, it has frustratingly failed to materialize since.
Nevertheless, according to the Board`s latest circular, Gilley is still expected to compete for the British title. The event is planned to take place at Portman Road, the home of Ipswich Town Football Club, featuring on the undercard headlined by Fabio Wardley vs Justis Huni.
Since his victory over Greene, the 30-year-old Gilley has had limited ring time, with just one appearance resulting in a fourth-round stoppage win against Jack McGann. This reflects a period of relative inactivity for Gilley.
In contrast, Ishmael Davis (13-2, 6 KOs) has been more active, particularly in 2024, which he started with a unanimous decision triumph over Troy Williamson.
Despite consistently taking fights on short notice, `The Black Panther` delivered a gutsy performance in a majority decision defeat to Josh Kelly. He later suffered a sixth-round stoppage loss to world-level contender Serhii Bohachuk, also stepping in on short preparation.
An injury earlier this year prevented Davis from returning to action as planned, leading to Caoimhin Agyarko stepping in to face Ryan Kelly instead.
Despite past setbacks, Davis is now expected to once again serve as a reliable late replacement, with the proposed clash against Sam Gilley looking highly probable to move forward.
