Featherweight boxer Rhys Edwards is preparing for an intriguing matchup against Leon Woodstock. This marks Woodstock`s return to the ring following his unanimous decision loss to Peter McGrail.
The pair are scheduled to meet on June 7th as part of the undercard for the Callum Simpson vs. Ivan Zucco event. The fight will take place at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, the home ground of Barnsley Football Club.
Previously, Boxxer promoter Ben Shalom had informed Boxing News that Isaac Lowe, who recently lost on points to Lee McGregor, was considered a potential opponent for Edwards (record: 16-1 with 4 KOs).
However, after Lowe had to withdraw due to illness, former British title challenger Leon Woodstock stepped up to seize the opportunity.
The 31-year-old Woodstock`s last outing was a majority decision defeat to Kurt Walker, who was subsequently outpointed by Liam Davies just last Saturday.
Despite this recent setback, Woodstock has faced strong competition throughout his career, with his only other professional defeats coming against notable fighters like Anthony Cacace, Archie Sharp, and Zelfa Barrett. This track record confirms he is a solid competitor at the British level.
Meanwhile, Edwards harbors ambitions of moving beyond the domestic scene, building on his commendable performance against Peter McGrail.
Their bout occurred last December. Even though Edwards took the fight on just a few days` notice and moved up to 130lbs, the 25-year-old delivered a polished display against his highly-rated adversary.
Having also secured impressive victories over Thomas Patrick Ward and Brad Foster, Edwards certainly appears ready to take the next significant step in his career.
For now, however, the Welshman, who trains under Gary Lockett, seems fully focused on his upcoming challenge. He is reportedly sparring rounds with rangy lightweight Gavin Gwynne in preparation.
