Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman is navigating the rehabilitation process for a fractured wrist, and while he is optimistic about his progress, he remains uncertain whether he will be cleared to play when the 2025-26 NHL season commences.
Hyman sustained the injury during Game 4 of the Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars. The incident occurred in the neutral zone following a hit from Mason Marchment as Hyman attempted to clear the puck from his defensive zone. He immediately left the game, visibly distressed and holding his right arm.
Providing an update on his condition, Hyman confirmed he is still wearing a protective brace on the injured wrist. He stated he feels “good” and anticipates having the brace removed within the next couple of weeks. However, he was careful to temper expectations regarding a specific return date, emphasizing that he is currently focused on the “recovery phase” and eager to get back on the ice when medically cleared.
When questioned about his readiness for opening night, the veteran forward drew upon past experiences with significant injuries, notably an ACL tear. He explained that setting a firm timeline can lead to disappointment if recovery does not unfold precisely as planned. While acknowledging that beginning the season on time is “definitely not out of the question,” he reiterated that he has “haven`t set a date or anything like that.” It appears Hyman has adopted a pragmatic approach: hope for the best outcome, but prepare for the recovery process to dictate the schedule, rather than the calendar.
Hyman expressed his hope to join his teammates on opening night, but ultimately, the decision will depend on how the wrist heals and his ability to regain full function and strength necessary for the rigors of NHL competition. His status will be a key storyline for the Oilers heading into training camp.
