Jaime Munguia’s team has issued a strong denial of any prior knowledge or suspected involvement from trainer Eddy Reynoso regarding the boxer`s recent adverse drug test finding.
News of the positive A-sample from a VADA test, conducted last week, has cast a shadow over the Mexican fighter`s victory against Bruno Surace.
Their initial fight took place late last year, where Munguia suffered a surprising sixth-round knockout defeat to his less-known opponent.
However, in the rematch last month, the 28-year-old Munguia delivered a much more controlled performance, supported by his characteristic high punch volume, ultimately winning by decision.
Naturally, questions about the authenticity of his high-volume fighting style have emerged. While the result of the B-sample test is still pending, many within the boxing community have already formed their conclusions.
Simultaneously, Munguia’s team released a statement – following the former world champion’s social media post proclaiming his innocence – urging people to consider potential contamination as a cause.
The official statement also indicated that Munguia’s other VADA test results, reportedly numerous, had all come back negative.
However, the undeniable fact remains that exogenous testosterone, a prohibited substance, was detected in at least one of his tests.
It has also been highlighted that Munguia`s decision to team up with the highly regarded coach Reynoso before his win over Surace adds to the suspicion.
Several boxers, including notable names like Canelo Alvarez, Oscar Valdez, and Julio Cesar Martinez, have previously tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs while training under Reynoso`s guidance.
Despite this history, Munguia’s team insists that any suggestions linking Reynoso to the adverse finding are completely unfounded.
“We also want to clarify that Eddy Reynoso serves only as Jaime’s trainer,” the official statement reads.
“He is not involved in Jaime’s nutrition, supplementation, or medical oversight. Likewise, no one on Canelo Álvarez’s team has any role in overseeing Jaime’s regimen or is in any way responsible for this situation.”
“Any implication that Reynoso or anyone associated with Canelo’s team bears responsibility is entirely unfounded and unfair.”
“The only person responsible for overseeing Jaime’s supplements and vitamins is Marco Antonio Pérez Espinoza, who has worked with Jaime since nearly the beginning of his professional career. This is the first time Marco has ever been connected to a situation of this nature, and is fully cooperating in the current review process.”
“We have not been informed of the exact levels detected in the initial test, which is a critical piece of information, nor have we received the result of the B-sample, which is currently pending.”
