Popular heavyweight Johnny Fisher is looking towards a potential opportunity for the British title. This hinges on him successfully overcoming the challenge posed by the experienced Dave Allen in their upcoming rematch this Saturday.
The two fighters are set to clash at the Copper Box Arena in London. Their initial bout ended in a highly debated split decision win for Fisher (13-0, 11 KOs). Despite scoring a fifth-round knockdown and seemingly having control over significant parts of the later rounds, Allen (23-7-2, 18 KOs) felt strongly that the scorecards from last December were unfair.
This rematch provides both competitors the chance to definitively settle their rivalry. Fisher aims to eliminate any lingering questions about his capabilities on the domestic boxing scene.
However, even if he triumphs over what promises to be another difficult test, the challenges facing “The Romford Bull” aren`t expected to diminish.
Matchroom CEO Frank Smith has highlighted the winner of the anticipated rematch between David Adeleye and Jeamie TKV, expected later this year, as a “sensible” next opponent for Fisher.
Adeleye (14-1, 13 KOs) secured the vacant British title against TKV (8-2, 5 KOs) in their controversial fight last month. Adeleye won via a sixth-round stoppage, but the result was widely scrutinised. Adeleye landed a sharp left hook as he pulled away from a clinch, immediately after the referee had called “break.” TKV, 28, was unable to continue, leading to widespread debate.
While Olympic bronze medallist Frazer Clarke has also expressed interest in a fight with Fisher, the Matchroom team appears to view the Adeleye/TKV winner as the more likely immediate next step.
For Frank Smith, pursuing the British title represents the logical next stage in Fisher`s career. He suggested that if David Adeleye is victorious in his rematch, a more consistent working relationship between Matchroom and Queensberry could help facilitate the fight.
“I think, right now, the winner of [Adeleye-TKV 2] is probably the most sensible fight after this one [against Allen],” Smith stated.
He added, “[Fisher’s] got to come through Saturday night – it’s going to be a real test – but I believe that he will [win].”
Concluding his thoughts on potential future matchups, Smith remarked, “Frazer’s been in with Fabio [Wardley] at a higher level, you would have to say, so I think the winner of [Adeleye-TKV 2] is probably the right fight in terms of next steps.”
