Preview Kamaru Usman Turns Down Rival Callout, Aims for Welterweight Title Shot After UFC Atlanta Win

Kamaru Usman delivered a classic performance, reminiscent of his prime, in the main event of UFC Atlanta.

Following a three-fight losing streak and nearly two years of inactivity, there were questions about the future of Kamaru Usman`s remarkable UFC career.

Nevertheless, the former welterweight champion made his return to the Octagon this past Saturday at UFC Atlanta, showcasing his signature dominance over five rounds against Joaquin Buckley to secure a decision victory.

This win for `The Nigerian Nightmare` not only ended Buckley`s six-fight winning streak but also solidified Usman`s position, likely keeping him in the top five of the welterweight division.

Usman Sets Sights on Welterweight Title Shot After Dominant Showing

Despite this impressive comeback, the 38-year-old`s longevity at the top of the division remains a question, particularly given the persistent concerns about his knees.

Immediately after his victory, Usman was challenged by Belal Muhammad, who is coming off a loss to Jack Della Maddalena.

Given their ongoing rivalry, a fight between Muhammad and Usman would be a compelling matchup. However, Usman`s focus lies elsewhere, seemingly not involving a confrontation with `Remember The Name`.

At the post-fight press conference, Usman stated his clear intention to fight for the title next. “Absolutely [I want the title shot next],” he said, emphasizing that he only needed one skillset against Buckley but possesses knockout power. He argued that as the biggest name in the division and given UFC`s focus on entertainment, the next major fight should be against the winner of the potential bout between Jack Della Maddalena and Islam Makhachev.

Usman highlighted the potential clash between former and current pound-for-pound kings if Makhachev were involved, asking rhetorically, “who doesn’t pay for that?”

Usman Dismisses Muhammad`s Challenge

When asked by a reporter at the press conference if he would be interested in fighting Muhammad, especially in light of Muhammad`s callout and their history,

Usman dismissively responded, “Who is it? Who`s that? Next.”

Muhammad quickly reacted on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “The guy that made you cry on your podcast.”

Despite fan interest in a matchup between Usman and Muhammad, `The Nigerian Nightmare` has made it clear that his sole objective is to regain the welterweight championship.
