Preview Jon Jones Discusses Infamous Sparring Knockout Story

UFC legend Jon Jones has finally shed light on a long-rumored sparring session that resulted in him being knocked out by a former UFC welterweight.

While Jones`s professional record shows a disqualification loss to Matt Hamill in 2009, this is widely seen as a controversial call, and the rule has since been amended. Many fans consider this the only blemish on his otherwise dominant career.

Jones Confirms Knockout Loss to Adlan Amagov in Sparring

There has, however, been a persistent story for years about Jones being knocked out in a sparring session. He has now confirmed this account is true, even recalling the specific technique used, which notably mirrors a strike he later used in a major fight.

Jon Jones confirmed that he was, in fact, knocked out by Adlan Amagov when they sparred in Albuquerque over a decade ago. The story was initially shared by former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit, who also reportedly suffered a similar fate from the same move.

The widely circulated account describes Adlan Amagov arriving for a training session and landing a powerful spinning back kick that first dropped Carlos Condit. Just a couple of rounds later, Amagov repeated the move, this time knocking out Jones, who has rarely shown vulnerability in official fights.

Jones himself confirmed the incident in a social media video, recounting the moment with a friend of Amagov. He stated, “Adlan Amagov KO’d me, very true story. Spinning back kick, boom, me down. It’s okay, sometimes it happens. But next time… One day, Carlos Condit and me, Adlan, two people.”

The Long-Standing Sparring Story

Former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit was reportedly the first to share the story publicly during an appearance on the Jaxxon Podcast. He described the event to Rampage Jackson, highlighting it as seemingly the only instance of Jones being stopped in a training or fight setting.

Condit recounted, “He was a spinning back kick guy and he f—ed me up. And then I think a round or two later, he hit Jon with that spinning back kick and he dropped him. Nah [he didn’t get kicked out], he stayed around.”

Notably, Jones later incorporated the spinning back kick into his own arsenal, using it effectively in several fights. A prime example is his knockout win over Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 in November, where a similar technique played a role.
