Many observers believe Alex Pereira has a solid chance against UFC Light Heavyweight champion Magomed Ankalaev in their potential rematch.
The Light Heavyweight title changed hands earlier this year at UFC 313, where Pereira lost to Ankalaev in the main event.
Ankalaev`s victory via unanimous decision brought an end to Pereira`s remarkable title reign, which saw the Brazilian successfully defend his belt four times within an 11-month span.
A immediate title rematch between Alex Pereira and Ankalaev is widely anticipated for later this year. Pereira aims to avenge his loss, which was only the second defeat of his UFC career.
Both former middleweight champion Sean Strickland and Pereira`s significant rival, Israel Adesanya (the only fighter to have knocked out Pereira in the UFC), think Pereira has a `legitimate shot` at reclaiming the championship.
Israel Adesanya Says Alex Pereira `Can Get It Done` in Magomed Ankalaev Rematch
Looking ahead to a potential second fight between Pereira and Ankalaev, Adesanya expressed admiration for `Poatan` and his accomplishments in a short time in the UFC.
“I’m so proud of the guy, what he’s done,” Adesanya commented about Pereira on the FREESTYLEBENDER podcast.
Recalling their shared history, Adesanya jokingly stated how he felt responsible for Pereira`s entry into the UFC:
“It’s like I created a monster.”
Adesanya continued, acknowledging Pereira`s success across two weight classes:
“He showed why he is who he is across two weight classes—I can’t wait to see the next fight with him and Ankalaev again.”
Offering his prediction for the rematch, Adesanya added:
“I think it’ll be another hard one, but I think [Pereira] can get it done.”
He explained his reasoning:
“Because it wasn’t a complete washout for that [first] fight [and] he’s exponentially getting better as well.”
While Ankalaev had the advantage in striking during their first meeting, Pereira successfully defended all 12 of Ankalaev’s takedown attempts at UFC 313.
UFC Legend Don Frye Advises Alex Pereira to Take Time Off
Pereira was undoubtedly one of the most active champions in recent UFC history, defending his belt three times last year alone.
Following his title loss in March, it is rumored that Pereira may take a necessary break. Reports suggest he declined an immediate rematch against Ankalaev scheduled for UFC 317 on June 28th.
UFC Hall of Famer Don Frye offered advice, hoping Pereira prioritizes his health and avoids rushing back.
“If you’re hurt, take the time off and heal up,” Frye said regarding Pereira’s current situation.
Reflecting on his own career mistakes, Frye admitted:
“I never did. I always, I just popped the pills and kept going, fighting through it.”
He warned about the consequences:
“That ended up making my career take a sh*t.”
Frye also criticized the relationship between fighters and promoters, stating:
“Come to find out the promoter don’t give a damn,” he continued. “They don’t give a damn about you. I haven’t got one Christmas card or birthday card from any promoter ever and I made them all a lot of f*cking money.”
He shared a somber personal experience to emphasize his point:
“I died in the hospital a couple of times, and nobody ever called me up and said, how you doing? I hope you’re better…”
