MMA fighter Francis Ngannou has issued a statement following his involvement in a fatal motorcycle crash in his home country of Cameroon. The incident tragically resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl.
The accident reportedly took place over the Easter weekend in the Omnisports district of Yaounde. Ngannou was reportedly riding a motorcycle that collided with the young woman. Specific details of the crash have not yet been fully disclosed. The victim sustained injuries to her arm and leg, and Ngannou is reported to have quickly transported her to a local medical facility for urgent care.
Despite efforts, the young woman sadly succumbed to her injuries and passed away at Yaounde General Hospital.
In his statement, Ngannou conveyed his deep sorrow and commitment to the victim`s family. “From the very beginning, I have been by the family’s side, offering support, comfort, and deepest condolences during this time,” Ngannou told TMZ Sports. “I’ve met with them privately to share in their grief, and I will continue to stand with them every step of the way.”
He added, “I carry their pain with me, and my unwavering thoughts and support remain with them as they face this heartbreaking loss.”
Cameroonian authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
The 38-year-old Ngannou recently returned to MMA competition in October, making his PFL debut with a dominant first-round victory over Renan Ferreira. This marked his first MMA bout in over two years.
Before his return to the cage, Ngannou participated in high-profile boxing matches against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, following his departure from the UFC.
The former UFC Heavyweight Champion has also faced personal tragedy this year, revealing in April 2024 the sudden death of his 15-month-old son, Kobe.
