UFC middleweight Bo Nickal recently sparked controversy on the Ariel Helwani Show by claiming that former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington refused a bout against him at the proposed UFC White House event. Covington, however, vehemently refuted Nickal’s assertion, subsequently launching a blistering verbal assault on the promising wrestling talent.
Covington firmly stated, “Not true. Hunter [Campbell] and the UFC never even considered or presented that fight. Why would the UFC schedule me against an unranked opponent, particularly one from a different weight class?” He then quickly shifted to a more personal attack, labeling Nickal a “Bozo” and a “quitter.” Covington elaborated, “This ‘Bozo’ Nickal quit for everyone to see. He fancies himself a fighter, but he’s merely a competitor. We witnessed his true colors against RDR (Reinier de Ridder), the Dutch grappler. The moment the fight intensified, he folded. He’s a quitter. Why would the UFC offer me a fight with a quitter?” He insisted the fight was never offered but claimed he would have gladly accepted it at the White House, deeming it “an easy fight” because Nickal “can’t strike, and he can’t wrestle and hold me down.” Covington concluded his initial tirade with a highly controversial comparison: “Bozo, Bo Nickal sucks worse than [Jerry] Sandusky.”
Covington speculated that Nickal was likely misinformed, suggesting the middleweight doesn’t handle his own affairs. “That’s the issue,” Covington explained. “Bo doesn’t represent himself, so he’s completely out of the loop, likely just listening to his manager. In contrast, I deal directly with the UFC; I speak with Hunter [Campbell] regularly. Nickal has never communicated with Hunter or any high-ranking UFC official because he’s never headlined an event.” Covington then doubled down on his contempt for Nickal, branding him “an absolute nobody.” He continued, asserting, “The fans despise him. I despise him. Penn State despises him. Nobody likes him. He’s profoundly unlikable due to his constant entitlement and privileged attitude. He hasn’t achieved anything significant.” Covington further criticized Nickal’s reliability, noting, “He twice pulled out of fights against a 50-year-old Yoel Romero, not just once, but twice. He’s not a loyal company man. He’s even afraid to wrestle, having withdrawn from two wrestling matches. He’s unreliable, unranked, and simply a ‘Bozo’ – a nobody not worthy of my time.” He reiterated, “They didn’t offer the fight. He’s a Bozo, and he sucks worse than Sandusky.”
