Brandon Figueroa, a former world champion in two weight classes, is set to make his return to the ring. He is scheduled to face tough featherweight contender Joet Gonzalez on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao`s upcoming fight.
Reports indicate the bout will take place on July 19, marking Figueroa`s first fight since his unanimous decision defeat to Stephen Fulton last February.
In that previous outing, often dubbed the `Heartbreaker`, Figueroa was unable to effectively counter Fulton`s measured approach and fluid movement, resulting in the loss.
Now, Figueroa, who holds a professional record of 25 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw with 19 knockouts, is determined to revitalize his featherweight campaign and establish himself among the division`s elite.
Prior to the defeat by Fulton, Figueroa had a strong start in the 126-pound division, securing a points victory over Mark Magsayo and stopping both Carlos Castro and Jessie Magdaleno.
However, his performance against Fulton lacked his characteristic aggressiveness and volume, leading to the points defeat.
Despite this setback, the 28-year-old is eager to demonstrate that he remains a formidable force at the top level of professional boxing.
To prove this, he must first overcome Joet Gonzalez. Gonzalez is a respected opponent often seen as a gatekeeper to the top ranks, notable for the fact that his only professional losses have come against elite-level competition.
The event is expected to be headlined by Manny Pacquiao`s significant comeback fight against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios. Additionally, the card may feature other notable bouts, including a potential rematch between super-welterweight world champion Sebastian Fundora and Tim Tszyu, as well as the return of popular fighter Isaac `Pitbull` Cruz.
