Preview Bowen Byram and the Buffalo Sabres Headed for Salary Arbitration

As the dust settles from the initial flurry of NHL free agency, teams and players who couldn`t reach contract agreements face procedural next steps. For the Buffalo Sabres and defenseman Bowen Byram, that next step is salary arbitration, a formal process initiated by the team.

Salary arbitration in the NHL is a mechanism designed to resolve contract disputes between clubs and their unsigned restricted free agents (RFAs) when direct negotiation has stalled. It involves presenting arguments for a player`s appropriate salary to a neutral third-party arbitrator, who then issues a binding award.

Crucially, in this instance, the Sabres elected arbitration, not Byram. This detail introduces a specific dynamic: under league rules, when a team files for arbitration, the player retains the right to choose the term of the resulting contract award (either one or two years). Furthermore, a player taken to arbitration by their team is no longer eligible to sign an offer sheet from another club, effectively removing that particular off-season wrinkle from the equation.

The deadline for teams to file for arbitration with eligible players passed recently, with the Sabres making their decision regarding Byram. This sets the stage for potential arbitration hearings, which are scheduled to take place between July 20 and August 4. However, it is worth noting that negotiations between the team and the player can, and often do, continue right up until the scheduled hearing date. Many cases are settled beforehand, rendering the formal hearing unnecessary.

Bowen Byram, a 24-year-old defenseman, was originally selected fourth overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. He was acquired by the Sabres in a trade in March 2024. Over his career, he has accumulated 110 points from the blueline in 246 games, showcasing offensive capability that will undoubtedly be a factor in his salary negotiations.

Byram`s case is one of a relatively small number headed for this stage of the off-season contract process. While several players elected arbitration themselves, Byram is currently noted as the sole player whose arbitration was initiated by his club.

Among the group of players currently slated for salary arbitration:

  • Player Elected: (List of 11 other players omitted for brevity and focus)
  • Team Elected:
    Bowen Byram (Buffalo Sabres)

Whether Byram and the Sabres will find common ground before their hearing date remains to be seen, but the filing of arbitration ensures that a resolution to his contract status is formally in motion and is expected within the coming weeks, either through a negotiated deal or an arbitrator`s decision.
