Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz generated sparks at last night`s New York press conference, promising a brutal super-middleweight showdown set for July 12 at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Sheeraz, 25, is stepping up from middleweight following an impressive three-year run, highlighted by a European title victory over Tyler Denny last September. His prior WBC title challenge against Carlos Adames resulted in a controversial draw, which many considered fortunate for the Brit. Now, under the guidance of new trainer Andy Lee, Sheeraz intends to make a strong statement in his 168lbs debut.
Berlanga, the New York-born Puerto Rican, is well-acquainted with the public eye. A former world title challenger, he is known for his fierce style and unwavering confidence. The 27-year-old dismissed Sheeraz`s achievements, vowing to dominate on his home turf.
“You already know what`s going to happen. I`m knocking him out,” Berlanga declared forcefully. “He said we`re underestimating him, but I don`t underestimate anyone. You`re in NYC, the lion`s den. We intend to hurt him. I`m going to break every bone in this guy`s face and do what I do best: put on a show.”
Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) didn`t mince words, labeling Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs) predictable. “He`s a basic fighter,” he stated. “I`ve been boxing since I was six. What he brings, I`ve already seen. He`s trained by Andy Lee? I dealt with the last opponent, and now I`ll deal with this one.”
Sheeraz, undefeated in 22 professional fights and typically reserved, hit back, readily accepting the underdog role. “I`m coming, and I`m coming for everything,” he promised. “For the first time, I`m being underestimated. I get it; you`re only as good as your last performance. On July 12, when I get the win, the Hamzah Sheeraz hype train will be back on track.”
Given both fighters are known for their explosive, offensive styles, this high-stakes bout has the potential to end early. Sheeraz predicted: “I`ve learned a lot since my last fight. I`ll throw a few jabs, land a right hand on the chin, and knock him out. But if it goes 12 rounds, it`ll be explosive.”
