Citing the potential impact of the nation`s general elections, the tournament`s chairman, Mahbub Anam, has indicated that the traditional December-January window may be shifted, possibly to May.
This announcement follows an emergency board meeting of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The proposed schedule change appears to be directly linked to the government`s directive for all relevant bodies to focus on preparations for a peaceful and orderly general election, which is anticipated in early 2026. The BPL`s standard timing could potentially conflict with this national priority.
Mr. Anam confirmed that the BCB is awaiting a definitive decision from the government before finalizing the new slot for the league. While a pre-December option was briefly mentioned, the May window has emerged as the primary alternative being planned, reflecting the need to avoid the election period.
Beyond the immediate scheduling challenge, the BCB is also embarking on a strategic effort to enhance the BPL`s operational standards and market standing. A key initiative involves appointing a specialized sports marketing consultancy firm to manage the tournament. This move, prompted by past experiences – which the board frankly admitted involved “inexperienced companies” causing harm – aims to bring in professional expertise.
Expressions of Interest (EOI) have already been solicited. The BCB intends to prioritize firms with a proven track record of successfully organizing international T20 leagues and possessing highly skilled personnel. This pragmatic approach underscores a clear intent to elevate the BPL`s brand value and establish it as a more professionally managed entity.
Furthermore, plans are underway to expand the geographical footprint of the league. Currently utilizing three venues (Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet), the BCB is actively exploring adding more cities to the roster. Stadiums in Bogura, Khulna, Barisal, and Rajshahi are currently undergoing auditing or development work. Inclusion in the BPL would be contingent upon these venues meeting ICC standards and providing adequate accommodation for players, broadening the tournament`s reach across the country.
With the league reportedly entering a new five-year cycle, corporate interest is noted as high. However, potential partnerships will be assessed only after a new financial model for the tournament is finalized. The BCB indicates a direct approach to engage with various corporate houses moving forward.
