Anthony Cacace has now set his sights on world championship honours after delivering a devastating ninth-round stoppage victory over Leigh Wood.
His decisive win took place last night at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, England. The relentless Irishman continued his impressive run of form while fighting away from home.
However, the 36-year-old boxer’s next fight might be in more familiar surroundings. Queensberry Promotions boss Frank Warren has hinted at a possible event in Belfast later this year.
Although a return to Belfast seems the probable location for Cacace’s next announced fight, a series of exciting performances on the road has given his career significant late momentum.
Following major victories against Joe Cordina and Josh Warrington last year, ‘Anto’ entered his confrontation with Wood (28-4, 17 KOs) with immense confidence.
It wasn`t long before another commanding performance unfolded. After scoring a knockdown in the ninth round, Cacace (24-1, 9 KOs) ultimately forced Wood`s corner to throw in the towel.
Potential Matchup: O’Shaquie Foster vs Anthony Cacace?
Shortly after the demanding fight, Warren confirmed that plans for a bout in Belfast are indeed underway, mentioning WBC world champion O’Shaquie Foster as a potential opponent.
The American is coming off a split decision victory over Robson Conceicao, a win that avenged a highly debated loss to the same Brazilian fighter earlier last year.
Meanwhile, Foster`s next likely opponent is Stephen Fulton, who, according to promoter Tom Brown, is aiming to become a three-division world champion.
Regardless of whether that specific fight materializes, it appears that Cacace, having vacated his IBF belt earlier this year, is determined to become a two-time world champion and, perhaps more importantly, secure life-changing earnings.
“I believe that’s who it is – that’s who we’ll get,” Cacace stated [SOURCE REMOVED].
“We will fight for the WBC title in Belfast soon. O’Shaquie hasn’t really had major opportunities, so this is a big chance for him to come over and fight me in Belfast.”
“We’ll just have to see if he has the courage. I will knock him out if the fight happens.”
